Republicans should think long and hard about this simple fact: If they follow the course set out by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, every one of them will be as responsible as Trump and Cruz for the debasement of their own Party.
The Party of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt is transforming before our eyes and unconditionally surrendering its moral compass to Trump and Cruz.
In the aftermath of Justice Scalia’s passing, Senator McConnell could have announced his intent to fulfill the Senate’s constitutional responsibility and invited the President to send a well-qualified candidate to the Senate for consideration.
But that’s not what the he did, because that’s not what the Party of Trump does. Instead, Senator McConnell announced that he will deny President Obama his constitutional right to appoint nominees to the Supreme Court.
We must reject the extremist approach to government being propagated by the likes of Donald Trump and Ted Cruz. It will only hurt our country. Put aside this unprecedented obstruction and work with President Obama to fill this crucial vacancy on the Supreme Court.
