Apache tribe occupies sacred land to be destroyed by mine, refusing to leave
Oak Flat—once part of an Apache reservation—is considered sacred space by the local tribe but it was awarded to a mining company through a defense bill in 2014 (to which John McCain added the sales provision) and will be completely destroyed. Now the tribe has occupied the land and refuses to leave, claiming their freedom of religion is being infringed upon.
