Oil well out of control in North Dakota

BISMARCK, N.D., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- An oil well in western North Dakota is out of control at least three days after a spill was reported, the state Department of Health reported.
The Health Department said it was notified of the spill by Oasis Petroleum, which said it lost control of the well Saturday night local time. Bill Suess, a spill manager for the department, was quoted by the Grand Forks Herald as saying about 1,760 barrels of oil were recovered so far from the well site.
"It's a significant leak," he said.
There was no statement on the spill from Oasis Petroleum. The Health Department said light sheen was observed on the White Earth River a little less than a quarter mile away from the well.
"[Containment] booms were placed across the river to help keep the spill material from migrating downstream," the department said.
In May, Oasis Petroleum reported its fourth release of brine, known also as produced water, in the state this year.
Energy companies inject brine, or salt water, to improve oil and gas production from shale deposits. The Federal Environmental Protection Agency said brine may contain toxic metals and radioactive substances that can be "very damaging" to the environment and public health if released on the surface.
Oasis increased net daily production from its portfolio by 35 percent from 2013 levels to 45,656 barrels of oil equivalent last year. Close to 90 percent of that is in the form of oil. Full-year 2015 production is expected in the range of 45,000 to 49,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
In a separate statement, the North Dakota Department of Health said about 300 barrels of oil were spilled in nearby Williams County at a site operated by Murex Petroleum. About 60 barrels have been recovered so far.
"The spill was discovered on Oct. 16 and is suspected to have been caused by vandalism," the state said. "Seals were broken on two tanks that contained the oil."

Marijuana Could Literally Replace These 5 Prescription Drugs

Marijuana Could Literally Replace

These 5 Prescription Drugs

A new study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Review
found that people are increasingly substituting prescription
medication, alcohol, and illicit drugs with cannabis, signaling a
shift in the public's understanding of marijuana's medicinal benefits.

Of the 473 adult cannabis users surveyed by the Centre for Addictions
Research of British Columbia, more than 86 percent of respondents
reported giving up one or more of the substances for pot, with the
alternative. Those under 40 were also more likely to substitute all
three for cannabis, demonstrating its dynamic appeal for both
recreational and medical purposes.

People suffering from chronic pain might be particularly inclined
to use cannabis instead of prescription medication in light of
recent studies that establish its effectiveness at treating pain,
improving the quality of patients' lives, and posing no risk of
serious adverse side effects. But there are numerous studies
that support the idea of marijuana as a safer, more effective
alternative to dangerous, addictive pills for a range of illnesses.

HERE ARE FIVE PRESCRIPTION MEDICATIONS THAT

COULD BE REPLACED BY CANNABIS.

1. VICODIN (PAINKILLERS)

Multiple studies have determined that marijuana is an effective
treatment option for people suffering from chronic pain.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,
44 Americans die each day from painkiller overdose.

2. XANAX (ANTI-ANXIETY MEDICATION)

Xanax

Not everyone can treat their anxiety with cannabis. For some,
smoking pot causes acute anxiety and paranoia, but that effect
is often connected with the type of marijuana that the user
consumes. Whereas sativas, which are associated with cerebral
highs, can sometimes induce anxiety (especially for infrequent
users), indica strains of marijuana have been shown to reduce
anxiety.

3. ADDERALL (STIMULANTS)

Adderall

Just as people who suffer from anxiety should be weary of
using certain strains of cannabis to treat their disorder, people
who want to replace their prescription stimulant with marijuana
should be aware that sativas (as opposed to indicas) are more
effective at treating ADHD and ADD.

4. AMBIEN (SLEEP AIDS)

Using marijuana to treat sleeping problems is one of the most
common applications.Studies and anecdotal reports suggest
that it is safer and similarly effective at treating insomnia than
prescription drugs such as Ambien, for example.

5. ZOLOFT (ANTIDEPRESSANTS)

Many medical marijuana patients (and several studies) have
found that cannabis serves as an effective treatment option
for depression. While it might not be right for everyone,
research has shown that smoking pot has less serious
side effects than those that have been attributed to
taking anti-depressants.

U.S. History of Bombing Hospitals

Poetry in Motion: Power Plant Will Use Ocean Tides to Power 155K Homes

tidal powerplant release Tidal Lagoon Swansea Bay Plc

This planned power plant in Wales may look like the Guggenheim Museum but its benefits far outweigh the beauty: it will use the rise and fall of ocean tides to generate enough renewable electricity to power 155,000 homes for 120 years.
When completed, the structure will produce electricity enough to displace more than a quarter million barrels of oil each year— while leaving virtually no carbon footprint.
Power plants have been generating electricity using the tides since 1966, but the Swansea project is the first to employ a radically new method of harnessing the natural forces. The secret lies in its nearly six-mile-long barrier wall that will enclose a huge amount of water in an artificial “tidal lagoon”.
The lagoon captures and holds seawater at high tide. As the tide goes out, water in the 4.5 square mile lagoon will be as much as 27 feet higher than the water outside its walls. This tremendous pressure will be routed through 26 turbines, rushing out to sea until the water level equalizes on both sides of the lagoon. At high tide, the flow is reversed, keeping the sea out of the lagoon until it reaches maximum height, then letting the water rush through the turbines again until it fills up the lagoon.
The amount of water rushing through the turbines each day would fill 100,000 Olympic swimming pools.

Speaking of which, the Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon will not only crank out clean energy, but could be used as a sports arena, aquaculture farm, and seaside sculpture garden.
The lagoon can also be used as a giant arena for sailing and cycling sports. Designers have plans for sculptures that appear to disappear into the water or rise out of it as the tides roll in and out.
The Swansea Bay Tidal Lagoon will also feature a community aquaculture farm growing oysters, kelp and other local sea crops.
The location in Swansea, Wales was chosen because it has some of the highest tide differences in the U.K., maximizing the amount of water that can be used to turn turbines and generate the 420 gigawatt hours per year.
The UK Energy Ministry approved planning in June and construction is expected to start as early as sometime in 2017. Its $1.5 billion price tag relies on government subsidies for 35 years, but the builders have suggested they could give up much of the subsidies in exchange for approval on two more tidal lagoon plants at Cardiff and Newport.
