Whole Foods, Organic Valley and Stoneyfield have teamed up with Monsanto and Dupont to nullify Vermont’s new GMO labeling law that now requires companies to disclose the genetically engineered ingredients hiding in nearly 75 percent of processed foods in this country.
Food Democracy Now reported last week that the self-described “organic companies” have brokered a last-minute backroom deal with the “devil” food giants that guts a national GMO labeling bill and overturns Vermont’s new state law.
Thanks to Vermont’s historic legislation, which went into effect July 1, many major food companies like Campbell’s, General Mills, Pepsi, Nestle and Smucker’s have already started labeling their products as “partially produced with genetic engineering.”
“Thanks to Monsanto and this corrupt cabal of organic executives all the provisions of the new bill are optional and would exempt 85% of GMOs planted today, including those from all of Monsanto’s Roundup Ready GMO seeds,” reports Food Democracy Now, who, along with the Organic Consumers Association, is leading a grassroots campaign urging the Senate to vote against the new version of the bill.
The new version of the national bill would block all state labeling laws for two years, while the U.S. Department of Agriculture worked on setting national standards. The national standard would allow companies to label their products with a QR Code (which must be scanned with a smart phone):

Supporters of the new bill include Just Label It, the Organic Trade Association, Stonyfield, Smucker’s, Organic Valley and Whole Foods. Food Democracy Now and the Organic Consumers Association claim these organic food companies and “consumer interest” groups have formed an unholy alliance with Monsanto and DuPont to protect their own bottom lines. They’ve sold out because GMOs are already in 75 percent of processed foods and labeling them as such could be a deadly blow to profit margins.
